The Environmental Club at West Point High School, which we co-sponsor the charter of, visited Mattapony Reserve on a field trip in September 2024. The day-long event featured a guided kayak tour where students explored the river's distinctive ecology from a cultural angle and identified various indigenous plants, learning about their significance to native communities. Afterward, we gathered at the pavilion where students attended a cultural presentation and participated in a pottery-making workshop led by tribal elder Christine “Rippling Water” Custalow.
The school principal, staff and school board members joined us for an indigenous lunch. We have an ongoing relationship with WPHS and will offer more field trips in the future!
